International Dory field set after Monday's final

GLOUCESTER— The International Dory Race field is set.

Three crews punched their ticket to the June 22 races during Saturday’s elimination races and the field was finalized on Monday with a doozy of a men’s final.

Veteran tandems Tom Jarvis and Jimmy Tarantino along with Joe Cominelli and Ray D’Amico were expected to have a close race in Monday’s final after each won their respective elimination races on Saturday and the race lived up to its billing.

Neither team could find any breathing room throughout the mile race course off of Niles Beach and by the time the teams hit the finish line it was Jarvis and Tarantino winning by a nose with a time of 9:23, just two seconds ahead of Cominelli and D’Amico.

Tarantino and Jarvis, who have won multiple International Dory Racing titles as a team, will now face Canadian rowers from the Lunenburg Nova Scotia area at the 61st Annual International Dory Races on June 22 at the Jodrey State Fish Pier (10:00 a.m.).

Glenn Harrington and Erik Dombrowski earned the right to face the Canadians winning a four boat heat in the Master’s (Over 40) Division on Saturday. Joey Ciolino and Kyle Edmonds (juniors) and Mike Frontiera and Elin D’Angelo (mixed doubles) also qualified for the International Races as the only entrants in their respective divisions.

Monday’s Men’s Division Final was nip and tuck from start to finish. It was Cominelli and D’Amico that got off to the superior start but the eventual victors quickly evened things up on the way out to the flag, which sits a half mile off of Niles Beach.

Cominelli and D’Amico had a small lead heading back towards the beach thanks to a perfect turn of the flag, but Jarvis and Tarantino closed the gap again, this time taking the lead by as much as a full boat length.

The victors held onto that lead to the finish line holding off one final push from Cominelli and D’Amico to preserve the win.
