Black, Holscher receive NEC Scholar Athlete Awards

Gloucester’s Sophie Black and Jacob Holscher were honored last weekend as Gloucester’s recipients of the Northeastern Conference Scholar Athlete Awards. Black and Holscher were presented the awards at the NEC Scholar Athlete Banquet last Sunday at Port Hole in Lynn.

A male and female athlete from each of the 12 Northeastern Conference schools receive the award each year for excellence both in the classroom and on the athletic fields.

For Gloucester, Black and Holscher perfectly fit the bill.

Black has had an outstanding senior year on the athletic fields as she was a three sport captain leading the cross country team in the fall, the basketball team in the winter and the softball team this spring.

The senior captain is a four year varsity player on the basketball team and a three year starter. This winter she was the leading scorer for girls on Cape Ann averaging 13.8 points per game. She was named to the Northeastern Conference All Star team this winter while leading her team to the state tournament for the fourth straight year.

In the classroom Black has also built up quite the resume sporting a 94 grade point average which ranks 12th in her class. She is a member of the National Honors Society, the Gloucester Interact Club and received a Sawyer Medal in her Freshman year.

Holscher has also put together a stellar senior year as the captain of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. In the fall he captained the cross country team to an unbeaten regular season and the Northeastern Conference championship. In the winter he took his game to another level being crowned the Northeastern Conference mile champion and earning a top five finish in the All State mile becoming just the third runner at Gloucester to run a sub 4:20 mile.

This spring Holscher was a part of a record breaking 4x400 relay team is is slated to participate in the Class A state meet next weekend.

In the classroom Holscher sports a perfect 4.0 GPA and is ranked fourth in his class. He was a Sawyer Medal recipient as a freshman and received the school’s Advanced Placement Chemistry Award.
