---- — To the DL
The Red Sox placed a pair of starting position players on the disabled list Friday.
Outfielder Shane Victorino, who missed the last three games, was placed on the 15 day DL with a hamstring injury, as was third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who has been suffering from back spasms.
This is Victorino’s third stint on the DL this season, he signed a three year deal with the Sox this offseason and is hitting .283 with two home runs and 10 RBI in the season. Middlebrooks has been in a slump all season hitting just .201 with eight homers and 21 RBI.
Jose Iglesias was called up to take Middlebrooks’ spot and will play in his place along with Pedro Ciriaco. The Red Sox also activated David Ross from the seven day concussion DL and demoted Ryan Lavarnway. Pitcher Alfredo Aceves takes Victorino’s spot on the roster.
The Brooklyn Nets were reportedly interested in Celtics head coach Doc Rivers to fill their vacant head coaching position. Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, however, denied the Nets request to speak with Rivers.
Ainge says that he expects Rivers to be back as the team’s coach in 2013-14.
“Doc has told me he’s coming back,” Ainge. “I talk to him almost every day about our team and what we are going to do moving forward. “We know people want Doc. We know people want [Rajon Rondo] and KG and Paul Pierce. They are the Celtics. They’ve all had great success.”
Rivers has three years and $21M remaining on his contract with the Celtics.
Bill Russell is the greatest basketball player of all time, this according to former Bulls and Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, who won 11 NBA titles as a coach. Jackson told Time Magazine that if he were starting a franchise and had the choice of any player in the history of the league, he would choose Russell first, then Michael Jordan. Russell won 11 championships as a player in his NBA career.
Jackson also said he believes Jordan was a superior player to Kobe Bryant, he won five titles with Kobe and six titles with Jordan.
