Bulls loss = Celtics opportunity
The Chicago Bulls chances at an NBA title went from good to nonexistent in a split second Saturday when star point guard Derrick Rose tore his acl late in the fourth quarter of game 1 against Philadelphia.
The Bulls should still beat the 76ers in round one, but if the Celtics get by the Hawks (not an easy task and should not be taken for granted), Boston will meet Chicago in round 2.
This is a huge opportunity for Boston to get back to the Conference Finals. While I still think the Bulls are too tough for the Celtics even without Rose, it makes the series a virtual coin flip. If the Celtics peak at the right time they could be poised for an upset.
Drafting defense
We now know why the Patriots spent most of its resources picking up offensive upgrades on the free agent market, because they wanted to focus almost entirely on defense in the NFL Draft.
It was nice this weekend to see Bill Belichick and company draft positions of need instead of trading back several times for value picks. As a result New England picked up several notable players that could help turn around a defense that was much maligned in 2011.
If the defense improves just a little bit, this team could be the favorite in the AFC again, because we know the offense has gotten better.
Changes for the Bruins?
After this weeks disappointing first round loss at the hands of the Washington Capitals, the Bruins could be making some changes heading into the 2012-2013 season. The most notable could be Tim Thomas, who makes a lot of money and is pushing 40.
Fortunately for Boston Thomas still has trade value as he was not bad in this year's playoffs, and the Bruins have a star goalie waiting in the wings in Tukka Rask. Milan Lucic and David Krejci could get some interest from other teams as well.
When all is said and done lets hope the B's find a player in their biggest area of need, top line scoring. More specifically a sniper that can pick corners, it was too frustrating watching Rich Peverly put a wrist shot off the high glass seven times a game.
