Manchester Essex track off to whirlwind start

---- — The Manchester Essex track teams had a busy first week of competition, a week that featured three meets, three new school records and several athletes qualifying for the Class D state meet later this winter.

The Hornets opened up the season last Wednesday in a three-way meet with Hamilton-Wenham and Newburyport at Andover High School. The boys split the two meets besting Hamilton-Wenham 46-40 and falling to Newburyport 65-21. The girls dropped both meets 60-26 against Hamilton-Wenham and 63-33 against Newburyport.

John Beardsley led the way for Manchester Essex last week posting first place finishes in the 300 and the high jump, breaking a school record in the latter with a jump of 5’6”. Cory McCollum set a new school record in the shot put with a first place throw of 36’ while Cam Holley won the 1,000 with a time of 2:54.

On the girls side Taylor Meet took first place in the 300, her first race at that distance, with a time of 48.5 and Olivia Lantz won the mile with a time of 5:18.8.

Manchester Essex then went on to compete at the Massachusetts Track Coaches Association’s Winter Festival meet at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston on Sunday.

The Hornets set several personal records in Sunday’s event. Lantz won the mile with a time of 5:11.72, the second best mile run in the state so far this winter and qualifies her for the Class D state meet.

Beardsley dropped a half second off his best 300 time (39.15) and qualified for the Class D state meet in the process. Fiona Davis finishes second in the two mile with a personal best and state qualifying time in the two-mile (12:24.73). The girls 4x800 relay team of Fiona Davis, Olivia Lantz, Evelyn Lantz and Niamh Dalton also qualified for the state meet.

Other personal best times at Sunday’s meet were Evelyn Lantz in the 1000 (3:29.02), which was one second off from a state qualifying time and a school record, Sarah Lewiecki in the 1000 (3:35.76), Dalton in the 600, (1:56.17), Maura McCormick in the 2-mile (12:15.35), and Charlie Davis (11:27.03), Connor Senay (12:23.32) and Campbell Fackre (11:23.74) all in the boys two-mile.
