Crunch Time

Big Game Alert

It may be very early in the season, but the Gloucester and Rockport hockey teams both have big games on the agenda tonight at the Talbot Rink.

At 6:00 p.m. Gloucester opens up the season against rival Danvers. The game is a huge barometer for Gloucester as Danvers is seen as one of the top teams in the Northeastern Conference North and is already 2-0.

Directly following Gloucester vs. Danvers at 8:00 p.m. is Rockport vs. Shawsheen.

The Rams have owned the Commonwealth Athletic Conference over the past half decade and Rockport is the favorite to dethrone them this season. Rockport is also looking to break into the win column after a disappointing 4-1 loss in their season opener against Swampscott on Saturday.

A win for Rockport would already put them in the CAC drivers seat.

Sanchez benched

The Jets have finally seen enough of quarterback Mark Sanchez. Apparently Monday Night’s five turnovers in the Jets 14-10 loss to the Titans, a loss that knocked them out of the playoffs for the second straight season, was enough for head coach Rex Ryan.

Ryan announced on Tuesday that Greg McElroy will start in place of Sanchez. The Jets are going with McElroy over backup quarterback Tim Tebow.

After another disappointing season the Jets could clean house this offseason, front office, coaching staff and players.

Bradley practices

Avery Bradley is inching closer to his return to the Boston Celtics.

The shooting guard, who has been out since May with a shoulder injury that required surgery, was back at practice on Tuesday for the first time since injuring the shoulder in last season’s playoffs.

Bradley will be a huge addition to the Celtics, his defense is much needed and it also gives the team the depth it has been boasting about after several solid off season pickups.
