Area Roundup: Strong second half fuels Gloucester boys hoop

Boys Basketball

Gloucester 69 Winthrop 62

Gloucester (1-1) was powered by a strong third quarter that erased a 35-29 halftime deficit.

“The second half tonight was the best half of basketball we have played in years,” Gloucester head coach Bill Cahill said. “We hustled, we never quit and all 11 guys contributed. It was a great win.”

Junior forward Connor Adkins led the way for Gloucester with a career high 24 points. Jason Vizena chipped in 12 points while Drew Shairs was a force on the glass with 15 rebounds to go along with eight points.

Amesbury 55 Manchester Essex 53

The Hornets drop to 0-2 in dramatic fashion as Amesbury sunk a three pointer at the buzzer for the winner. Manchester Essex has lost both of its games by a combined four points.

Sean Gutierrez led the way for the Hornets with 13 points and 15 rebounds, Max Nesbit had 10 points.

Girls Basketball

Rockport 36 North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie 30

The Vikings (1-2) were down 22-11 at the half but a huge second half led them to their first win of the season.

Eighth grader Rachel Haselgard led the way with 15 points, all of them in the second half. Kayla Parisi chipped in eight and along with Sarah Rowen drew the praise of head coach Steve O’Connor for strong defense and rebounding.

Heather MacArthur (6 points), clinched the win with two free throws in the final minute of play.


Ipswich 105 Manchester Essex 77

The Hornets (0-1) had some great individual performances Monday despite the loss.

Senior captain Alex Walder qualified for the state meet with a diving score of 193.75.

Easton Ehlers placed first in the 100m back stroke and the 100m freestyle with times of 1:06.84 and 58.53 respectively. The 400m freestyle relay team of Ehlers, Walder, Nathaniel Rautio and Alex Shepard finished second (4:07.22). Olivia Painter finished third in the 500m freestyle (7:12.53) and fourth in the 200m freestyle (2:32.44).
