Crunch Time

Burstingon the scene

Former Manchester Essex tennis standout Brittany Collens, the No. 1 singles player on the 2013 Division 3 state champion Hornets, is already making her mark at the Division 1 College level.

In her first match for New Mexico St. Collens turned in a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles in the Aggies win over UTEP last week.

“Brittany really impressed me today,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “She beat a very good and experienced player and I can see that Brittany has a very bright collegiate career ahead of her.”

Expensive fight

The NFL was busy dishing out several fines stemming from the fracas at the end of the Patriots and Jets Thursday night football game last week. The fight started after Jets center Nick Mangold hit Aqib Talib below the knees and out of bounds following a game clinching interception.

Jets guard Willie Colon, who was ejected from the game, was fined a combined $34,125 for two infractions, $26,250 for contact with an official, and $7,875 for throwing a punch in the fight. Jets tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson, who was also ejected, was docked $15,000 for throwing a punch.

Three Patriots were also fined $7,875 for throwing punches, Vince Wilfork, Alfonzo Dennard and Michael Buchanan.

Mangold was not fined for the hit that started the whole thing. Talib came out earlier this week saying the hit was not dirty.

Chandler Jones was also fined $15,750 for a roughing the passer penalty earlier in the contest.

Record Setter

Last Saturday’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight broke pay per view records with 2.2 million buys, netting $150M in revenues.

The mark breaks the previous record, which featured Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya, from 2007. The Mayweather vs. De La Hoya fight was the much better fight of the two and much more competitive as last Saturday’s super fight was neither competitive or exciting.
