Crunch Time

CAL Open

Golfers from Manchester Essex and Rockport were well represented at Friday’s Cape Ann League Open.

Manchester Essex’s Mike Fuca finished in a tie for second place with 63 points while teammate Ben Bichet was tied for fourth with 64 points. Right behind them was Rockport’s Abby Hood in sixth place with 59 points.

Fuca, Bichet and Hood were each named All Cape Ann League. Hornets golfers Cam Tuttle, Kevin Carter and Petey Morton were named Cape Ann League All Stars as was Rockport’s Kyle Nelson. Rockport was awarded the league’s Sportsmanship Award.

We were wrong

There has been much talk about the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Patriots defensive lineman Chris Jones that negated a missed 55 yard field goal in overtime of the Patriots 30-27 loss at the Jets. The Jets would go on to win the game later in the drive with a 42 yard field goal.

A lot of Patriots fans have cried foul, as did Patriots coach Bill Belichick initially, saying it was legal for Jones to push a lineman on a field goal attempt as long as he is lined up on the line of scrimmage. But on Monday Belichick retracted that statement and put the blame on himself.

“Obviously we are wrong,” he said. “It’s our job to understand the rules. Whatever the bottom line is, we didn’t do it properly.”

Jones sent out a tweet after Sunday’s game placing the blame on himself for the “mistake”, but on Monday the Patriots head coach stood up for his player.

“Chris is obviously trying to do the right thing by stepping up and taking responsibility,” Belichick said. “But that’s not his responsibility. That’s ours. I just have to do a better job of coaching that. That’s not his fault.”

Leyland resigns

Detroit Tigers legendary manager Jim Leyland resigned from his post on Monday. Leyland, 68, will most likely retire from the game after a lengthy and storied managerial career. Leyland managed the 1997 Marlins to the World Series and also managed the Tigers to the World Series in 2006 and 2012.
