Big Game Alert
There are two huge games tonight on the boys soccer front involving Cape Ann teams.
We will start off with the 7-4-3 Gloucester’s senior night tilt with rival Danvers tonight at New Balance Track and Field at Newell Stadium (6 p.m.). The Falcons will come into the game having already clinched the Northeastern Conference Small title but the Fishermen would like nothing more than to notch another big win before the postseason begins. The two teams battled to a 1-1 draw the last time they met, in Danvers.
Rockport also has an important contest tonight at Amesbury (6:30 p.m.). With a win their season finale the 11-4-2 Vikings can clinch the Cape Ann League Small title. Rockport trounced winless Amesbury in the team’s first meeting by a score of 5-0.
World Series Game 1
Tonight is the moment we’ve all been waiting for, Game 1 of the World Series between the Red Sox and Cardinals at Fenway Park (8:07 p.m.).
Both teams will send their staff ace to the mound tonight with Jon Lester taking the hill for the Red Sox and Adam Wainwright getting the call for the Cardinals.
The rematch of the 2004 World Series, a Red Sox sweep, figures to be a good one as the Cardinals proved to be the class of the National League and the Red Sox likewise in the American League. The Cardinals pitching staff is on a roll, but the Sox have just survived an even better Detroit starting rotation. Boston also has the better lineup while both teams have a bevy of good relief pitchers to turn to.
It’s not going to be easy but the Red Sox grind their way to a seven game series win.
According to multiple media reports it was the Jets that tipped off game officials of the Patriots illegal pushing on field goal attempts. The reports state that Jets head coach Rex Ryan got the message from his brother, Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
That explains why the call was made, but it does not explain why the referees waited until a 55 yard field goal attempt in overtime to make the call for the first time despite the fact that both teams were carrying out the illegal pushing infraction on every field goal attempt throughout the game.
Still, shrewd move by Rex and company.
