---- — Rivers out?

Has Doc Rivers coached his last game with the Boston Celtics? Danny Ainge says he’s staying in 2013-14 but Rivers has hinted that it might be time for a change on the Celtics bench.

According to a report by ESPN, Rivers wants out as Celtics head coach because he believes the team will have to go through another rebuilding process. Rivers, who was named head coach in 2004 in the midst of a rebuilding campaign, still has three years and $21M left on his contract. The $7M a year may be what keeps Rivers around for at least one more season. Rivers is the second longest tenured coach in the NBA behind Greg Popovich of the Spurs.

The Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers asked permission to speak to Rivers about their vacant head coaching position last week but the Celtics would not let Rivers interview with either team.

Strikeout Machines

Some fans don’t like Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew because of being J.D Drew’s brother who was a player with little intensity.

The two brothers are similar, said Royals catcher and former Sox farmhand George Kottaras who has played with Stephen in Oakland and J.D. in Boston.

“Similar, kind of quiet, kind of do their thing,” Kottaras said.

That said, fans shouldn’t care about whether Stephen has the same personality as his brother. They should be more focused on his production.

And right now, he isn’t producing.

Stephen entered yesterday’s game batting .232 with a .325 on-base percentage and .401 slugging percentage. He had struck out 56 times in his first 177 at-bats and 51 games, including 10 times in his previous four games.

Third baseman Will Middlebrooks also has been a strikeout machine, with 56 in his first 181 at-bats and 47 games entering yesterday.

Quote of the Day

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan produced the quote of the day when asked about the New England Patriots signing former New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow.

“If they want to replace (Tom) Brady with him, that’s fine,” Ryan said, according to
