More Celtics rumors

The Celtics just can’t stay out of the news with trade rumors involving high profile players. Two days after the team agreed to terms with the Clippers to allow Doc Rivers to become their head coach, Paul Pierce has been the center of trade rumors.

The Bucks and Cavaliers are both interested in the forward according to multiple media reports, but both deals are considered a long shot. The Celtics have incentive to trade Pierce because they reportedly have a sign and trade deal in the works with the Hawks that would put forward Josh Smith in a Celtics uniform.

Boston, however, can only make the deal if it trades Pierce because it would acquire a trade exception. The Celtics can not make the deal under the collective bargaining agreement without acquiring a trade exception.

Josh Smith in a Celtics uniform is very enticing because he along with Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green would make the Celtics an athletic team that’s very fun to watch. Boston would still be at least one star player shy of being taken seriously though.

Middlebrooks demoted

Struggling Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks has been called down to Triple-A Pawtucket and have called up infielder Brandon Snyder.

Jose Iglesias now becomes Boston’s full time starting third baseman.

Middlebrooks has struggled mightily this season hitting .192 on the year.
