Ortiz named All-Star
Designated hitter David Ortiz was the only member of the Red Sox to be named to the American League All-Star team. He was elected to start at DH.
Ortiz received 4,986,979 votes, fifth-most in the majors, and more than 1.3 million more votes than Texas' Michael Young (3,604,042) who finished second in the AL DH voting.
Ortiz is hitting .302 with a .390 on-base percentage, .607 slugging percentage and .997 OPS. He has smashed 21 homers and driven in 54 runs.
Memphis pursuing Allen
The Miami Heat and Boston Celtics as well as the Memphis Grizzlies now are in pursuit of free agent guard Ray Allen, according to an ESPN.com report, which stated: "Sources said the Celtics, who Allen has spent the past five seasons with, are prepared to double the yearly salary the Heat can offer Allen, while the Grizzlies have offered Allen their full mid-level exception, worth $5 million, for two years."
Lowrie's power
Former Red Sox shortstop Jed Lowrie, who Boston traded to Houston this past offseason, leads all major league shortstop with 14 homers.
He is followed by Washington's Ian Desmond (13), Baltimore's J.J. Hardy (12) and Cleveland's Asdrubal Cabrera (11).
Current Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles is tied for the major league lead in RBIs (43) with Desmond.
