Dombrowski third at Tuesday's All State
Evan Dombrowski saved his best throw for last. The St. John's Prep Sophomore and Gloucester native entered Tuesday's MIAA All State Track and Field meet at Fitchburg St. University as the No. 8 seed in the shot put. Just as he did in last week's Class A State Championship meet, Dombrowski improved his spot with a personal best throw of 53' 3 3/4", good for third place in the entire state.
According to St. John's Prep head coach Ray Carey it was evident that Dombrowski was going to have a big day from the start as all six of his throws surpassed the 50' mark and five of them surpassed the 51' mark. Fittingly, Dombrowski hit his personal best on his final throw moving him into third place. North Attelboro junior Eric Beckwith won the event with a throw of 56' 3 3/4".
"That was a big personal best for him," Carey said. "This was the biggest meet of his life and the big stage brought out the best in him. His throw is especially impressive because he's so young, it's always great to see young kids step up."
Hood finishes 23rd at girls individual golf tournament
Rockport Sophomore Abby Hood had a strong showing at Tuesday's inaugural MIAA Girls Individual State Golf Tournament at The Bay Club in Mattapoiset. Hood shot a 92 over 18 holes and drew praised from coach Steve Clayton in the process.
"She hit the ball fantastic," Clayton said. "I'm very pleased with her performance, she was excellent off the tee and hit a lot of fairways. She is going to be a very important player for us this fall."
Hood, who plays golf for the Rockport boys team during the fall season because there is no Rockport girls golf team, shot a front nine 50 and really stepped up her game on the back nine shooting a 42.
