Football Friday head:Games to Watch

Gloucester (2-0) at Masconomet (0-1), tonight at 7 p.m.: The Fishermen have opened some eyes with two convincing wins to start the season while the Chieftains stumbled in their opener against Melrose. Something has to give tonight as Masco looks to get on the winning track and Gloucester looks to show its first 2-0 start since 2010 is no fluke. Of note, Masco has won two straight in the series but has yet to bet the Fisherman in a game in which Gloucester has a winning record.

North Andover (0-1) at Beverly (0-2), tonight at 7 p.m.: Someone has to get their first win in Light Up Hurd Stadium IV. The Panthers fell to North Andover’s MVC brethren Haverhill earlier and the Scarlet Knights are coming off a bye week after losing to Andover in Week 1. QB Casey Walsh and running back Tom Sabile are the players to watch for North Andover. Beverly hasn’t lost under the lights at Hurd, and certainly doesn’t want to fall to 0-3 given the new playoff structure.

Hamilton-Wenham (0-1) at North Reading (1-0), tonight at 7 p.m.: The Generals played a strong first half against Fenwick last week and if they’re looking to bring that sort of effort for the full 44 minutes tonight. QB Jack Clay had an outstanding debut with four touchdown passes and the game will be a contrast of styles as the Hornets love to run the ball out of the single wing. The health of Generals’ sophomore Cam Macri is a big factor to watch.

St. John’s Prep (1-1) at Central Catholic (2-0), tonight at 7 p.m.: In a possible Division 1 North playoff preview, the Eagles defense will have to play like it did in a Week 2 in rather than like it did in a Week 1 loss. The Raiders won a shootout with Lawrence and then blanked Haverhill and are no doubt preparing for a healthy dose to Maryland-bound Johnny Thomas. Central has a D1 recuit of its own in UNH-commit D’Andre Drummond-Mayrie, so keep an eye on him on both sides of the ball.
