---- — It was a battle of Cape Ann teams Monday at Bass Rocks Golf Club with Gloucester and Rockport squaring off on the links, and the match turned out to be a barnburner.

In the end it was the Fishermen taking advantage of their home turf coming away with a hard fought 38.5-33.5 victory. With the match being played at Bass Rocks the two teams played under the Northeastern Conferences match play format rather than the stableford scoring system Rockport normally plays in the Cape Ann League.

The win moves Gloucester to 3-5 on the year, Rockport falls to 1-7.

“It was a good, close match,” Rockport head coach Steve Clayton said. “It was well played and came down to the wire, good competition on both sides today.”

The Vikings held a one shot lead through the first six matches and it all come down to the No. 7 and No. 8 players, and Gloucester’s Kyle Mailey and Zack Thompson took care of business to clinch the win for the home team. Mailey won 6.5-2.5 at the No. 7 spot while Thompson won a close match 5.5-3.5 at the No. 8 spot.

“We needed Kyle and Zack to win their matches and they stepped up huge for us,” Gloucester head coach Brian Goulart said.

The match of the day came at the No. 1 spot as Gloucester’s Curtis Quinn and Rockport’s Abby Hood each had low rounds on the afternoon. While Hood had a great afternoon shooting a one over par 36, Quinn was on fire shooting a two under par 33 to win the match 6-3.

Rockport’s Kyle Nelson and Ethan Tanson were victorious at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively for the Vikings with Tanson winning his match 6-3 and Nelson winning 5.5-3.5.

Gloucester came back with wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots from Matt Lane (5.5-3.5) and Eric Chalmers (5.5-3.5).

“I keep moving Matt up in the lineup and he keeps improving each time out there,” Goulart said.

Rockport’s James Parisi won at the No. 6 spot 6-3 but Gloucester took the last two spots for the close win.

The Vikings are right back at it this afternoon as Newburyport visits Rockport golf club this afternoon (3:30 p.m.). Gloucester is off until Thursday when Northeastern Conference Small frontrunner Marblehead visits Bass Rocks (4 p.m.).
