The Red Sox announced their pitching rotation for the upcoming American League Division Series slated to start Friday at Fenway Park (3:07 p.m.).
Jon Lester (15-8, 3.75 ERA) will get the start in Game 1 Friday. John Lackey (10-13, 3.52 ERA) will pitch Game 2 Saturday at Fenway Park while Clay Buchholz (12-1, 1.74 ERA) will pitch Game 3 on the road and Jake Peavy (12-5, 4.17 ERA) will pitch Game 4 on the road if necessary. Lester will come back and pitch Game 5 at Fenway if it gets to that point.
The Red Sox found out who they will meet on Friday as the Indians and Rays played in the American League Wild Card game last night in Cleveland. The game ended after the Gloucester Times went to press.
Boston will also be carrying 11 pitchers and 14 hitters on its ALDS roster.
The Red Sox and the rest of the American League playoffs teams will start the ALDS on Friday, but the National League Divisional Series begins this afternoon.
The NL Central champion St. Louis Cardinals will square off with the NL Wild Card Pittsburgh Pirates today in Game 1 of their NLDS series (5:07 p.m.) in St. Louis. Adam Wainwright will start on the mound for the Cardinals opposite AJ Burnett of the Pirates.
At 8:37 p.m. the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers will meet in Atlanta. Kris Medlen gets the call for the Braves against Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers.
San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner is tired of being fined by the league, so much so that he is going through the process of changing his name.
That’s right, Whitner has already filed paperwork to remove the “W” from the beginning of his last name and will now be called Donte Hitner. He said a $21,000 fine handed out to him by the league for a hit against the Rams last week sparked the change.
“I actually put the paperwork in yesterday afternoon. Just waiting to get the paperwork out,” he said in a conference call with the Houston media. “So from here on out until I retire, my name will be Donte Hitner, without the W.”
