Crunch Time

Gronk Back?

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (back surgery) “is expected to be cleared to play this week,” according to Pro Football Talk.

The article stated: “The final decision will be made later in the week, with Dr. James Andrews in charge of the decision-making process. That means Gronkowski should be good to go on Sunday against the Saints, as the Patriots attempt to avoid their second straight loss.”

Not Long Ago

The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals will play today at 8:07 p.m. in decisive Game 5 of their National League Division Series.

The Pirates will start 23-year-old rookie Gerrit Cole who was the first overall pick in the 2011 start and won Game 2 of the series.

Just about a little under five months ago, on May 19, Cole was in the minors leagues pitching against the Boston Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate, the Pawtucket Red Sox. He lost to the PawSox, 11-3, giving up eight earned runs on six hits and three walks over 5.1 innings.

No Pressure

For someone who couldn’t deal with the pressure of playing in Boston, Carl Crawford certainly can deal with the pressure of the postseason. He batted .353 with a .421 on-base percentage and three homers in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ NLDS win over the Atlanta Braves.

Crawford is a .270 hitter in 100 postseason at-bats.

Sullinger returns

Nobody expected Celtics power forward Jared Sullinger to be in uniform for the Celtics opener on October 30 due to a back injury that ended his 2012-2013 season prematurely.

Turns out Sullinger was ready to play in the team’s preseason opener as he started Monday night against the Raptors scoring 14 points and adding six rebounds in 20 minutes of play.

Sullinger is one of the young players with upside the Celtics hope leads the team into the future, and having him healthy and in the lineup already is a positive for the present as well.
