---- — Glad he’s gone

Count Rex Ryan as one person who is glad that Wes Welker is not in a Patriots uniform anymore. The New York Jets head coach told ESPN on Tuesday that he is quite happy that he will not have to deal with the reception machine twice a year.

“I’m glad Wes is not there. I’m not kidding. That guy was a pain in the tail. I hated Wes Welker. Just kidding. Kind of. I admire him. I’m a huge fan of Wes Welker’s, but I’m glad he’s gone.

“Now, they bring in a guy who’s very similar, who went to the same school, a guy I know Wes Welker helped mentor. Will he have the same success as Wes Welker? We’ll see. Wes Welker had historical success.

“He’s unbelievable. Just a great route-runner. He doesn’t run but maybe five routes, but you can’t cover him. So talented, so tough, he’s like a running back when he catches the football, and Brady and him were on the same page all the time.

“I think Wes Welker’s a better athlete than people give him credit for. I think he does things other people at that position don’t do. I think that’s a really underrated aspect of Wes Welker.”

Drew to be evaluated

Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew was in Pittsburgh on Tuesday undergoing more tests at the University of Pittsburgh’s Sports Medicine Concussion Program.

Drew has not seen action since March 7, when he was hit in the helmet by a pitch.

Drew, the brother of former Red Sox free agent bust JD Drew, is slated to be the team’s starting shortstop but he is not expected to be ready by opening day thanks to the concussion. Jose Iglesias and Pedro Ciriaco could take his place in the Sox starting lineup on opening day.

Out for the season

Talk about a trade blowing up in your face. The Philadelphia 76ers moved one of its best players, Andre Iguodala, last offseason in a deal that brought them Andrew Bynum from the Lakers.

The ultra talented Bynum has not played yet this season with a knee injury and he will be out for the remainder of the season as he will undergo surgery on both knees. To make matters worse for Philadelphia Bynum is an unrestricted free agent.
