The Dallas Mavericks selected Gonzaga center Kelly Olynyk with the 13th pick of the NBA Draft Thursday night but reportedly have a trade in place to send him to the Boston Celtics according to multiple media reports.
The Celtics get Olynyk and sent the No. 16 pick, used to draft Brazilian center Lucas Nogueira, and the Celtics second round draft pick. The Mavericks turned right around and sent the Nogueira, the No. 16 pick, to the Hawks for the No. 18 pick, Miami point guard Shane Larkin, and a second rounder.
The Mavericks entered Thursday night’s draft intent on clearing salary cap space for a run at center Dwight Howard in free agency, and moving down in the draft twice helps.
Dallas and Boston in the midst of a roster makeover as the Celtics are also looking to deal Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Brooklyn Nets while Doc Rivers left the team this week to become head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Olynyk averaged 17.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in helping Gonzaga to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, he gives the Celtics some much needed size.
