Crunch Time

Good players, good guys

Notre Dame football announcer Allen Pinkett was suspended for saying “I’ve always felt like to have a successful team you’ve got to have a few bad citizens.”

SI.com’s Peter King made an interesting point, noting the Super Bowl teams, the Giants and Patriots, had just one arrest (the Pats’ Julian Edelman) and the charge was dismissed.

Bad Bet

Those who bet Florida St. University this weekend are surely upset with the outcome of their game.

The Seminoles entered Saturday’s contest as 70.5 point favorite over hapless Savannah St., who was coming off the heels of an 84-0 loss to Oklahoma St. the week prior.

Florida St. appeared to be well on its way to covering the absurd spread holding a 55-0 lead early in the third quarter. But that’s when the game was called, due to a pair of severe weather delays.

Both athletic directors agreed to let the outcome stand as it was, despite the fact that there was more than a quarter of football to be played.

Big week

for Tier 2

Tier 2 of the Northeastern Conference/Cape Ann League had a big week this weekend finishing week 1 with a 5-1 mark.

Gloucester was the only Tier 2 team to go down this weekend falling to Lynn English. Around the conference Danvers picked up a 23-18 win over Winthrop, Swampscott topped Somerville 34-32 and Salem trounced Peabody 38-8 on Friday night.

On Saturday Marblehead beat Pentucket 21-7 and Beverly, the early favorite in the league, earned an impressive 34-7 drubbing of Concord-Carlisle.
