Area Roundup: Gloucester boys hoop drops a close one on the road

The Fishermen (1-3) dropped another hard fought game on the road Friday as Swampscott hit a clutch three-pointer and two big free throws in the last minute to seal the win.

“I like this team, we hustle and we scrapped,” Gloucester head coach Bill Cahill said. “We are just young and inexperienced and that showed in the second half.”

Senior Austin Davis led the way for Gloucester with a career best 19 points on four three-pointers. Jason Vizena had 15 points, Jeff Oliveria chipped in 11 in what Cahill called the sophomore point guard’s best game of the season and Drew Shairs scored 10.

Manchester Essex 53 Rockport 31

The Hornets get into the win column (1-2) with a resounding win over Cape Ann rival Rockport. Manchester Essex Friday’s tilt wire-to-wire.

Sydney Christopher led the way offensively for the Hornets with 11 points with Ella Silag-Stearns scoring 10 and Ivy Silag-Stearns chipping in eight points. Rockport’s Heather MacArthur led all scorers with 18 points for the now 1-3 Vikings.
