Area Roundup: Locals fare well at Auerbach Fresh./Soph. meet

The Gloucester and Manchester Essex track teams were well represented this weekend at the 30th Annual MIAA Red Auerbach Freshman/Sophomore Track Meet at the Reggie Lewis track and field center in Boston.

The event, the largest of its kind in the country, featured over 1,600 athletes from all over the state competing and local runners had several personal best times to show for it.

Overall the local teams combined for 13 personal best times.

Manchester Essex sophomore Olivia Lantz had the best showing for Cape Ann runners this weekend with a first place finish in the 2-mile with a time of 11:01.46. The victory is even more impressive for Lantz given the fact that she moved to the 2-mile from her usual event, the mile. Lantz’s time is currently the No. 3 two-mile time in the state.

Gloucester was led by Sophomore Everest Crawford, who made big strides on Saturday with a third place finish in the 1,000m with a time of 2:40, eight seconds better than his previous personal best. Noah Hillier finished fifth in a strong shot put field with a throw of 39-8 1/2.

Gloucester also got personal best times from freshman Tyler Meunsaveng in the 300m (42.2), Willy Pierce in the 2-mile at 10:41.51 which was 20 seconds faster than his previous personal best, and Matt Carpenter in the mile with a time of 5:05.07.

Sophomore Cam Holley went to the medal podium for Manchester Essex with a fifth place finish in the mile with a personal best and state qualifying time of 2:54.43, best time in his heat.

Phebe Biggar set a school record in the 55m hurdles at 11.17 seconds as did the 4x400m relay team of Charlotte Freed, Jenny Cochand, Lantz and Biggar with a time of 4:40.03.

Other strong performances for Manchester Essex were from Freed in the 300m (49.38), David Reid in the mile (5:38.38), Jack Hay in the 600m (1:43.99), Luke O’Neil and Ethan Andersen in the 300m with times of 40.54 and 42.53 respectively, Hunter Flood and Liam Crossen in the dash with times of 8.13 and 8.15 respectively and Campbell Fackre in the 2-mile (11:10.57).
