Gloucester's Dombrowski breaks St. John's Prep shot put record

St. John’s Prep junior shot putter Evan Dembrowski took his game to the next level this past weekend at the Mass. State Coaches Association’s Elite Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

The Gloucester native is already seen as one of the top throwers in the state, and on Sunday in the Elite field he came up with his best throw to date. The 5’11” 275 pound junior finished his day Sunday with a fourth place throw of 55’-1”, which is a St. John’s Prep indoor record.

“It was a great throw in what has been a great season for Evan,” St. John’s Prep head coach Ray Carey said. “Evan is a thrower, he loves what he does and the hard work is paying off for him. He just fell in love with the sport and he is a track and field kid through and through”

Dombrowski, who was competing in the elite field featuring the top 24 shot put throwers in the state, broke 50’ on his first three throws Sunday in the stacked field moving on to the final. It was on Dombrowski’s fourth throw, the first throw of the final round, where he shattered his personal and the school record. His throw of 55’-1” was seven inches better than the previous record of 54’-6” and a whopping 15 inches further than is previous best throw of 53’-10”.

The Gloucester native said he knew the throw was good when he let it go, he just wasn’t sure how good.

“I felt really quick and right when it came out of my hand I knew it was going to be a big one, I just didn’t know for sure how big,” Dombrowski said. “I was excited when I heard the news, a 15 inch improvement is a huge improvement, but I still had two more throws so my focus was on trying to stay competitive in the meet.”
