During the 2011-2012 school year, senior Kyle Lucido did a little bit of everything for Gloucester sports teams. For starters Lucido was a three-sport star, starting for the football, basketball and baseball teams and being named a Northeastern Conference All Star in football and baseball.
The 2012 Gloucester Daily Times Gloucester male Athlete of the Year was also extremely versatile within each sport.
On the football field Lucido switched between fullback and running back, played both guard positions on the hardwood and played all three outfield positions and a little bit of infield on the baseball diamond.
"He did everything we asked of him," said Gloucester head baseball coach Joe Orlando. "He was a kid that we could play at a lot of positions because he's such a good athlete."
Lucido started the school year with a bang on the gridiron. Gloucester may have had a tough year on the football field but Lucido was a huge bright spot. Early in the season it was evident that the senior captain was Gloucester's best offensive weapon, and by season's end he proved that he was Gloucester's best weapon in every facet of the game offensively.
Lucido finished up the year rushing for a team high 841 yards and eight touchdowns; he also had a team high 18 receptions for 318 yards and another two touchdowns. He also chipped in a punt return touchdown on the year and amassed over 1,800 all-purpose yards (rushing, receiving, return) on the season.
The Fishermen running back was rewarded recently by being named to play in the Agganis All Star Football Classic as Gloucester's lone representative. The game will be played Friday, June 29, at Manning Field in Lynn.
"Kyle was our captain and truly our leader on and off the field," Gloucester head football coach Tony Zerilli said. "He played hurt, he played tired, but he always played at 100%. Even with a season like last year he never gave up, never gave in to taking a day off. He showed up every day early to play and help improve the team."
Lucido's success carried over into the spring season where he was second on the baseball team with a .380 batting average, 24 hits and 11 RBI out of the leadoff spot, a very impressive number.
The senior captain played right field, center field, left field and second base for Gloucester this year, helping the Fishermen to reach the state tournament for the ninth straight year and the second round of the state tournament for the fourth straight year.
He picked a great time to have his best offensive game of the year as his four-hit effort set the stage for a 10-0 Gloucester blowout in the Division 2 North First Round over Boston English.
No athlete at Gloucester this school year could match Lucido's versatility across three sports and within each sport.
