---- — Pitching Market Opening Up
With Zack Greinke, the best free agent pitcher on the market, to be introduced soon as newest addition to the Dodgers’ starting staff, the starting pitching market should become a lot more active in the next couple of weeks.
Anibal Sanchez likely will be the next big free agent starter to sign and expect him to be pricey enough that the Boston Red Sox won’t make too serious a run at him.
Boston needs to add a starting pitcher and Kyle Lohse, Shaun Marcum, Ryan Dempster, Edwin Jackson and Francisco Liriano are the most attractive names on the free agent market after Sanchez.
Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star recently reported that Jackson’s market seems “very cool.” Jackson received just a one-year deal last year. Seems he could be headed in that direction again this offseason.
The Red Sox made a two-year, $25 million offer to Dempster but he turned it down, according to ESPNBoston.com.
The Kansas City Royals and the Tampa Bay Rays were involved in a big trade Monday. The Rays sent top of the line starting pitcher James Shields and back of the rotation starter Wade Davis to the Royals for big time prospect Wil Myers.
It was rumored that the Royals may have also been interested in Red Sox starter Jon Lester in exchange for Myers but at the moment Shields appears to be the superior pitcher.
In Myers the Rays are getting a 22 year old outfielder who is one of the top prospects in baseball. Myers hit 37 homers in the minors last season and is seen by many as a future superstar in the league.
The Royals wanted Shields to bolster its pitching staff so it can win right away.
Celtics Forward Fined
Boston Celtics forward Chris Wilcox was fined $25,000 yesterday for making an obscene gesture to the crowd in Philadelphia on Friday night when the Kiss Cam put the spotlight on both him and teammate Jared Sullinger.
