Crunch Time

Sox Acquire Byrd

The Red Sox got a little outfield help on Saturday acquiring Marlon Byrd from the Chicago Cubs for Michael Bowden and a player to be named later.

Byrd, 34, will help the Red Sox shorthanded outfield. He is an upgrade over Darnell McDonald who is a career .278 hitter. Byrd is definitely serviceable and the Sox could use all the help they can get at this point.

Marketing Genius

Hats off to the marketing department at Popeye's Fried Chicken. Over the last week the fried chicken chain's Kenmore Square location, right outside of Fenway Park, hung a banner saying "Four out of five starting pitchers prefer our chicken."

Of course poking fun at the Red Sox fried chicken and beer fiasco of 2011. The banner is great for two reasons, first off it's funny, and secondly it's true as the Red Sox pitching staff was in fact ordering its fried chicken from Popeyes.

BC ducks UMass

The Commonwealth Classic has generated much needed publicity and excitement for the Boston College and UMass basketball programs. Now BC is pulling out, citing the ACC schedule expanding from 16 to 18 games. Obviously, the real reason is they fear getting shellacked by much improved UMass, which buried the rebuilding Eagles by 36 points this year.

Hey, BC, how about dropping UNH, BU, Stony Brook, Bryant, Sacred Heart, Harvard or URI instead?
