BY THE NUMBERS

With a win this weekend, Marblehead would start the season 6-0 for the second straight year. Just how rare is that feat?

Bishop Fenwick began the year 5-0 last year and could do so again with a win tonight as well. Besides those two, the last team from the area to do it was Masconomet, which started 8-0 in both 2004 and 2005.

The Chieftains have started at least 5-0 five times over the last 20 seasons, which is the second most of any local program. Peabody had the most with seven.

In the NEC, Gloucester has 10 starts of at least 5-0 over the last 20 years. Winthrop has three (all in a row from 2004-06) and Swamspcott has four, doing so in back-to-back years in 2002-03.

Bishop Fenwick boasts five starts of at least 5-0 since 1994, St. John’s Prep has three and Ipswich and Hamilton-Wenham have two. So far, Marblehead, Beverly, Danvers and North Shore Tech have just one season with at least five straight wins to start.

So the Magician and Crusaders’ potential feats this weekend are rare indeed.

GAMES TO WATCH

Danvers (3-1) at Lynn Classical (2-2), tonight at 7 p.m.: The Falcons can take control of the NEC South race by becoming the league’s only unbeaten team, but to do so they’ll have to go through an improving, physical Rams team. If you believe in common opponents, Danvers needed a late fumble return to beat Peabody, a team Classical handled. Two of the NEC’s better backs, Alex Valles and Brad Scuzzarella, will be on display in a can’t miss showdown.

---

St. John’s Prep (3-2) at Catholic Memorial (1-3), tonight at 7 p.m.: The Knights come in having lost three in a row, but they’ve all been against solid competition in St. John’s Shrewsbury, Brockton and Xaverian. The Eagles will need to continue to improve on defense and get good production for backs Cody Harwood and Dillon Preston to earn a win in an always hostile environment and continue their march to the Division 1 North playoffs.

ON THE AIR

The Gloucester vs. Lynn English game will be broadcast on both North Shore 104.9 and MSO Web Radio at moorestuffonline.com Friday night at 7 p.m.
