Big Game Alert

This weekend is a huge weekend for local high school soccer and field hockey teams with three state tournament games on the slate.

This afternoon Rockport boys soccer and Manchester Essex field hockey will take the field for its first state tournament games.

The No. 2 Vikings will host No. 15 Lynn Tech this afternoon at Rockport High School (5 p.m.) in the Division 4 North First Round. Today’s winner will move on to the Division 4 North Quarterfinals to meet No. 7 Hamilton-Wenham.

The second seeded Hornets will be hosting No. 7 Newburyport in the Division 2 North Quarterfinals this afternoon at Hyland Field in a Cape Ann League clash. Manchester Essex holds a 3-0 win over the Clippers from earlier this season and the winner will move on to the sectional semifinals to meet the winner of No. 3 Ipswich and No. 6 Weston’s quarterfinal game.

On Sunday the Gloucester boys soccer team will finish off the weekend tournament schedule. The No. 14 Fishermen will travel to No. 3 Concord Carlisle (3 p.m.) in the Division 2 North First Round. Sunday’s winner moves on to the Division 2 North Quarterfinals to face off against the winner of No. 5 Beverly and No. 12 Northeast’s first round matchup.


Buffalo Sabres goon John Scott was issued a seven game suspension for a head shot on Bruins forward Loui Eriksson that caused the Bruin to sustain a concussion.

Scott received a match penalty for the October 23 hit and has been out of the Sabres lineup ever since.


Derek Jeter will be in a Yankees uniform for one more year as the future Hall of Fame shortstop, who will turn 40 during the 2014 season, signed a one-year $14M contract with the Bronx Bombers.
