State title tennis match moved to today

For the second time this week the Manchester Essex girls tennis team has had a key state tournament game postponed due to weather.

On Monday Manchester Essex had its state semifinal tilt with Cohasset pushed back two days. The Hornets went on to eliminate the previously unbeaten Skippers in a 3-2 thriller at Newton South High School.

The unbeaten (21-0) Division 3 North champions were slated to meet Division 3 West champion Monument Mountain in the Division 3 State Finals on Friday, but heavy rain Friday morning pushed the match back to this afternoon at St. John’s High School in Shewsbury (3:00 p.m.).

Manchester Essex will be looking for its second Division 3 State Championship in three years as it last won a title in 2011 with a win over Lenox in the state final.

Monument Mountain (14-2), the No. 3 seed in the West Section, won its first Division 3 West Sectional Title breezing through the bracket with a 5-0 win over Greenfield in the quarters followed by 4-1 wins over Mt. Greylock in the sectional semis and Lenox in the West final.

The West champions punched their ticket to the state title match with a 4-1 win over Division 3 Central Champion Sutton in the state semifinals.

Manchester Essex also made its way to the state finals in impressive fashion besting top competition in a stacked North section before dispatching a powerhouse team in Cohasset in the state semifinals. The Hornets started their quest for a second title with a win over Notre Dame Academy in the sectional quarterfinals followed by a close win over Bedford in the semis avenging a 2012 state tournament loss.

The Cape Ann League Small champions rolled over Weston 4-1 in the North Final before taking out Cohasset.

At No. 1 singles Manchester Essex’s Brittany Collens will meet Sam White, who is unbeaten in tournament play. Michelle Fuca will square off with Courtney Freadman of Monument Mountain at No. 2 singles, Kendall McCormick meets Monument’s Shea Caligari at No. 3 singles.

At the doubles spots Rachel Daley and Chanel Bullock of Manchester Essex will meet Jen Evans and Cara Freadman at the No. 1 spot while Molly Carlson and Maura McCormick will play Molly Armstead and Emily Martin at the No. 2 slot.
