NE Open Ultimate Frisbee Tournament returns to Myopia

In three short years the New England Ultimate Frisbee Tournament has taken off.

Organized by Cape Ann Ultimate, a non-profit founded up by Rockport’s Tim Spittle in 2011 that is dedicated to fostering collegiate ultimate frisbee, New England Ultimate brings some of the top collegiate ultimate frisbee programs from all over the country to Myopia Hunt Club’s polo grounds for a weekend long tournament.

This year is no different as the 3rd Annual New England Ultimate Frisbee Tournament once again invades Myopia starting today (9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) and finishing up on Sunday.

”In just three years this event has become one of the best college tournaments on the east coast,” said Spittle, who also founded the Northeastern Ultimate Frisbee Club and will be competing for Northeastern in the tournament.

This weekend’s tournament will separate teams into two divisions, Division 1 and Division 2 and pool play will take place today with the elimination and championship rounds wrapping up the tournament on Sunday. Ten teams will compete in Division 2 while 20 teams will compete in Division 2.

In year’s past the tournament featured all schools from the northeast region (New England, New York and New Jersey) but this year the tournament has expanded its participant list to the mid-west and the west coast. A team from San Diego St. University will be making the longest trip to Myopia this weekend while the University of Michigan and Penn St. University will also be coming from outside the region. The tournament has become so popular that teams had to be put on a waiting list for entry this year.

Other Northeast schools joining Spittle and Northeastern in the tournament are Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, UConn, Cornell and Vermont to name a few. Smaller schools such as SUNY Buffalo, Salem State, Keene State, Bowdoin and Bentley will also be competing.
