PEDS sold to high schoolers
This is an excerpt that appeared on ESPN.com this week.
“The clinic operator at the heart of a Major League Baseball investigation into performance-enhancing drugs provided them to numerous high school students, according to former associates of Tony Bosch and documents obtained by ‘Outside the Lines.’
“One former Biogenesis of America employee, Porter Fischer, told ‘Outside the Lines’ he regularly saw 16- and 17-year-old boys come to the clinic, sometimes with their fathers.
“Asked what high school athletes were given, Fischer said: ‘Sports performance packages, which would include HGH, testosterone.’”
Not in Sox’ plans
Will Middlebrooks’ name has been rumored in trade talks with the Chicago White Sox for right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy.
Even if Middlebrooks isn’t traded before the July 31 nonwaiver deadline, he likely won’t be promoted to Boston from Triple-A Pawtucket any time soon despite how Boston could use another right-handed bat.
The Red Sox sound down on him right now. Middlebrooks entered yesterday batting .278 with a .336 on-base percentage for Pawtucket.
It seems like Xander Bogaerts would be the first internal option for a right-handed power bat. He entered last night hitting .273 with a .377 OBP, eight homers, 24 RBIs and five doubles in 37 games since his promotion from Double-A Portland.
“He’s had some games where he’s swung the bat very well,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said about Middlebrooks on Thursday. “There’s been some games where the inconsistencies emerge. Can’t say that it’s too different from what we saw here.”
