Steep asking price
The Red Sox have been involved in trade rumors regarding Philadelphia Phillies southpaw Cliff Lee, but it turns out the Phillies’ asking price may just be too high.
Philadelphia reportedly wants Red Sox infield prospect Xander Bogaerts in return for the 34 year old former Cy Young winner. While Lee would certainly bolster the Sox rotation, giving up their most prized prospect for a player who could turn out to be a rental is not in the Red Sox best interest.
The Sox have also been one of several teams involved in rumors regarding White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavey, who was pulled from his start Tuesday night in anticipation of a trade.
Boston has also been beaten out in two deals for relief pitchers as the Rays beat them to White Sox reliever Jessie Crain and the Tigers beat them to Astros closer Jose Veras.
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is this afternoon, and the Sox are reportedly negotiating with several teams about a number of potential deals.
The Red Sox need to make a move to set them up for the season’s stretch run while at the same time holding on to their most prized prospects for the future. Hopefully at least one solid relief pitcher makes his way to Boston this afternoon.
Apparently, the complete dismantling of “The Big Three” hasn’t fazed Boston Celtics’ season ticket holders. According to the Celtics, 90 percent of season ticket holders have renewed for next year. That’s well above the league average, which is about 80 percent.
