With a 2-0 win over Winthrop on the road Wednesday, Gloucester (9-4) now needs just one win over its final seven games to qualify for the Division 2 North state tournament for the ninth straight season.
Lenny Taormina went the distance for the shutout striking out six without allowing a single Winthrop runner to reach third base.
The Fishermen opened the scoring in the first inning when an Alex Webb (2 hits) sacrifice fly plated Kyle Lucido who led off the game with a triple. Logan Horne singled in Jason Vizena later to make it 2-0.

The Vikings gutted out a hard earned win to move to 6-4 on the season. Junior Tucker Meredith picked up his fifth win of the season going the distance in the process. He also pitched out of a seventh inning jam as the Indians left the winning run on second base and the tying run on third in the seventh. Mike Tupper led the offense with three hits while Adam Balzarini chipped in two.
The Vikings played the contest at Evans Field as the away team because Amesbury's field was not playable.
