---- — The Gloucester track team entered Tuesday’s meet at Danvers facing a steep uphill climb.

Not only were the Fishermen facing a tough Falcons squad that normally sits near the top of the Northeastern Conference on both the boys and girls sides, they also entered the meet shorthanded because of April vacation.

As a result, the Falcons came away with a pair of wins as the boys topped Gloucester 79-57 and the girls won 75-62.

“Both the boys and girls competed well,” Gloucester head coach Jeff Destino said. “It would have been interesting to see how we would stack up at full strength. But Danvers is a good, well coached program and they beat a good Gloucester team today.”

There were still plenty of strong individual performances to go around on both sides despite the loss.

The girls swept the mile and 2-mile with Kaci Quinn and Fiona Davis respectively picking up the wins. Bianca Giacalone won the 400 and Liz MacCormack won the shot put. The Gloucester girls were also controversially disqualified in the 4x100 relay for a lane violation. The score would not have factored in on the outcome but would have made the final score closer.

On the boys side Alex Lucido won the 400 hurdles, Everest Crawford won the mile, Calvin Kipruto finished first in the 400 and Pete Mondello won the javelin.

Both the Gloucester boys and girls fall to 2-1 after dropping its NEC South opener. The Fishermen are back in action next Tuesday at Winthrop

Against Danvers, boys and girls both lost, both sides shorthanded, kids on vaca, for the most part weren’t at full strength.
