The Manchester Essex boys cross country team got its first taste of what it’s like to race against the state’s best at Saturday’s All State Cross Country Meet at Northfield Mountain.
This year’s All State Meet saw the field split in half with a Division I and Division II race on both the boys and girls side. The young Hornets finished 18th in the Division 2 race on Saturday. Manchester Essex was the highest finishing CAL Small team edging 19th place Ipswich, the same team that edged the Hornets for the CAL Small title in the regular season.
Spencher Feuerbach was the top finisher for the Hornets Saturday followed by Cam Holley, Capbell Fackre, Eric Fossa, Eric Rajunas, Charlie Davis and Nathan Evans respectively.
The Hornets appear to be a team on the rise as every runner on the team is an underclassmen. Feuerbach, the team’s top finisher, is only an eighth grader to go alone with two freshman, three sophomores and one junior on a team that nearly won the CAL Small and made it all the way to the final meet of the season this fall.
Gloucester’s Noah Mondello finished off his high school cross country career with a solid 39th place finish and a time of 17:01 in the Division I race. Mondello qualified as an individual with a seventh place finish in last weekend’s Division 3 State Championship Meet with a time of 16:24. The Fishermen just missed qualifying as a team finishing sixth in a tight Division 3 field, the top four finishing teams qualify for the All State.
The senior polishes off a stellar four year cross country career that saw him make contributions immediately when he burst on to the scene as a freshman. Mondello earned three trips to the All State Meet, twice qualifying as an individual, he also placed fifth in the Northeastern Conference Championship Meet in October and helped lead the team to a 7-0 regular season record, good for the Northeastern Conference Small Title.
Manchester Essex junior Fiona Davis placed 56th in the girls Division II race with a time of 20:47. Davis qualified for her third All State appearance thanks to a fifth place finish in the girls Division 6 Championships last weekend.
Davis will return in 2013 to a Manchester Essex girls team that just missed qualifying for the Manchester Essex girls finishing seventh in Division 6.
Lowell won the Division I State title while Jonathan Green of St. John’s Shrewsbury was the individual winner with a time of 15:29. Peabody took home the Division I girls title with senior Catarina Rocha taking home the individual title for the second straight year, this year with a time of 18:06.
Pembroke won the Division II boys title with Bishop Feehan winning the Division II girls race.
