Those getting on Patriots head coach Bill Belichick for Rob Gronkowski’s broken forearm, which occurred on the team’s final extra point try to make it 59-24, are off base.
It’s easy to call for the team’s backups after the fact, but even if the second string offense was in the game, Gronkowski still would have been on the extra point/field goal team.
It is rare for an NFL, or a football team at any level for that matter, to replace somebody on an extra point or field goal team regardless of the situation and the score. In other words, Gronkowski is on that special teams unit and he did not have a replacement.
In fact, 98.5 the Sports Hub host and former Patriots quarterback Scott Zolak took it one step further saying he has never been on a team where a player on the extra point/field goal team was replaced at any point in the game except for an injury.
Sure the injury is going to hurt the Patriots over the final six weeks of the regular season, but it was an injury that could not have been prevented by the coaching staff, as much as some believe it could have. Bad karma is surely was not.
