Crunch Time

Davis Qualifies

Manchester Essex 2-miler Fiona Davis had to wait in anticipation for a day to see if she qualified for this weekends All State Meet. After Sunday's Division I meet the Sophomore found out she is in as her time of 11:48.89 was within the top 12 runners that did not finish in the top three in their respective divisions.

Davis joints teammate Olivia Lantz, who won the Division 4 mile Saturday, in the February 28 All State meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Beckett, Lester talk with media

Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett said he never missed a workout last September.

"I was ready to pitch every time I pitched, and I didn't execute pitches my last two starts," he said.

He did say he had lapses of judgement. Beckett, Jon Lester and John Lackey reportedly ate fried chicken and drank beer in the clubhouse during games last September while the Red Sox went 7-20.

"I'm not saying we didn't make mistakes, because we made mistakes in the clubhouse but the biggest mistake I made was not pitching well against Baltimore," Beckett said. "I was prepared to pitch every time I went out there. I just didn't execute pitches when I needed to."

Beckett said he did put on a little bit of weight.

"I don't have a reason for it," he said. "But it happened. I'm looking forward to going forward from here."

Lester also talked with the media yesterday and said he wants to try to be more of a leader.

"It's something the guys in my age group have never really had to do because we've been around guys like Wake and Tek and had veteran guys who have been around a long time," he said. "We've just sat back and let them do their thing and kind of follow them. It's time for us and me to step up and start to try and feel comfortable in that situation and do the best I can in there."
