Fishermen Youth Soccer polishes off another big season

Fishermen Youth Soccer (FYS) had another great spring season with over 400 players participating on teams from the age of 5-18. FYS travel program placed 16 teams in the Essex County Youth Soccer Association (ECYSA).

Teams amassed a record of 92-52-15 and three teams qualified for the ECYSA Tournament. The U12 Boys Mariners finished second in their group with a record of 6-2 beating Ipswich 3-1 to break a tie and qualify for the post season. The Mariners faced North Andover in round one and lost 2-0, North Andover went on to win the entire tournament.

The U19 Cape Ann United team consisting of players from Gloucester, Rockport and Manchester had a regular season record of 4-2 and lost to Salem in the semi-finals.

The third team to qualify was the U16 Cape Ann United FC who entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed. In their first game of the tournament they faced North Andover and played two 40 minute regulation halves to a scoreless tie. Regulation time was followed by two back and forth overtime periods after which the game was still 0-0.

The teams then went to a shoot out where Cape Ann United was carried by the amazing play of their keeper Paul “Buddy” Fears of Rockport who blocked three of the five penalty kicks in the shootout. Ethan Fuller of Rockport, Liam Crossen of Manchester and Daniel Sidell of Gloucester each delivered for CAU in the and by the accuracy of Ethan Fuller of Rockport, Liam Crossen of Manchester, and Daniel Sidell of Gloucester, who each made their shots to win the game 3-2.

“Buddy was amazing,” CAU head coach Dean Sidell said. “It it is tough way lose but an exciting way to win. I’ve been on both sides of a shootout. The guys played a great game today. They deserved the win”

CAU FC was later knocked out by top seed Beverly in the semifinals.
