Pool play is nearly complete in the District 15 Williamsport Little League Tournament and two Cape Ann teams are still alive in the competition.
Manchester Essex has already clinched a spot in the double-elimination round sporting a 2-0 record in pool play. Manchester Essex will move on regardless of the outcome of Friday’s game against Gloucester National (7:30 p.m., Sweeney Park, Manchester), who has been eliminated with a record of 0-2.
Gloucester American is holding on to their chances of moving on to the next round as it can force a three-way tie in its pool with a win over Beverly Friday (5:30 p.m., Ipswich). A Gloucester American win would mean three teams would be tied with a 2-2 record forcing a tie-breaker. Rockport has also been eliminated with a record of 0-4 in pool play.
It appears the Bruins are getting closer and closer to a long term deal with goalie Tuukka Rask. In fact, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli expects the team to reach an agreement with its star goalie and playoff hero as early as Friday.
“I feel confident that we’ll get a deal done on Rask in short order,” Chiarelli said on Wednesday.
It is rumored that the goalie, a restricted free agent, will be signing an eight year deal worth around $8.5M a year. Rask, 26, proved beyond a shadow of a doubt this postseason that he is a franchise goaltender, the Bruins are smart to lock him up quickly. If the rumored deal is true Rask would become the highest paid goalie in the league.
Backup goalie Anton Khudobin, a restricted free agent, is expected to test the market. As well as he played as a backup this season, the Bruins have the goalie depth to let him walk.
In other Bruins rumors the team is reportedly interested in free agent forward Daniel Alfredsson, an aging player but still a reliable scorer that the Bruins need.
In the latest Celtics rebuilding news the Detroit Pistons have reportedly acquired about he availability of Rajon Rondo. Ainge has said Rondo is not on the trading block but a first round pick from a bad team could be a tempting offer, especially given the strength of the 2014 draft class.
