Crunch Time

No Timetable

Will Middlebrooks has been lighting it up in Triple-A Pawtucket, driving in eight runs for the Paw Sox the other night, but manager John Farrell says there is no timetable for his return to the big club.

“As it was outlined to Will when he was optioned down, he’s on an option,” Farrell said. “That is very, very different than a rehab assignment where there’s an end date in mind. He’s there to get on the roll that we are confident he will.”

Brandon Snyder and Jose Iglesias have filled in nicely for Middlebrooks which means the team has no urgency to call him up to the majors until they know his problems have been

Doc and J.J. good buddies

It should be no surprise that J.J. Redick was dealt to the Los Angeles Clippers for two second round choices. The new VP/head coach of the Clippers is Doc Rivers.

They both live in the Orlando area and have reportedly played several rounds of golf together over the years. Redick often worked out at Rollins College in Winter Park, which is less than a mile from Rivers’ home.

When with the Celtics, Rivers tried several times to deal for Redick. Celtics President Danny Ainge apparently wanted Redick as well, which probably prompted Rivers to pull the trigger soon.

Some Sox nuggets

At 53-34 (.609), the Red Sox own the best record in the AL and the 2nd-best record in the majors behind Pittsburgh (.619, 52-32).

Boston’s 53 are most in Major League Baseball. No other AL team had more than 49 wins.

This was just the second time in franchise history that the Sox have won 51 games through July 2. They also did it in 1978 (52-24).
