---- — Abby Hood saved the best for last in the 2012-2013 school year.

The Rockport High junior had already put together a stellar season as a member of the golf team in the fall and as the No. 1 singles player on the tennis team in the spring. But it was her work in the girls individual state tournaments that took her season to the next level and solidified her spot as the 2013 Gloucester Daily Times Female Athlete of the Year for Rockport.

Hood is one of the top players on the Rockport golf team in the fall despite the fact that she plays against boys in every match. The junior is not intimidated playing on the boys team as she normally finishes near the top of the Vikings scoring list each match.

Given the chance to compete against all girls this spring, Hood proved to be amongst the cream of the crop placing amongst the elite in the Mass. District, State and New England girls championships.

She got things started at the Mass. Girls District Golf Championships in May placing fifth in a field of 44 shooting an 84. That finished qualified Hood for the MIAA Girls Golf State Tournament in June at Chicopee Country Club where she turned in an 86, good for a top 10 finish and a spot in the New England Championships.

At the New England Championships Hood turned in her best round yet shooting a 77 at Brentwood Golf Course in Keene, NH, good for eighth place out of 66 competitors and was just two shots off the winning score of 75. Hood’s round was extremely steady featuring 11 pars and a birdie.

“With her dedication to the game and the way she competes I knew she had it in her,” Rockport golf coach Steve Clayton said. “It’s the way she practices and sees the game, she has a plan on every hole and more often than not she executes it.”

Hood has always been accurate off the tee and in the fairways, but this year she added a lot of length to her game taking it to a whole new level.

“She’s very accurate,” Clayton said. “That’s the key component to her game. But now she’s starting to add some length giving her more opportunities to hit greens and earn a few more birdies.”

During the fall Cape Ann League season Hood, who played on the boys varsity team for a third season, was named the team’s most improved golfer for the second year in a row as one of the Vikings most consistent scorers. She will be team captain for the 2013 season.

Hood’s stellar season did not begin and end on the golf course as she was the top player on the girls tennis squad this spring as its No. 1 singles player. In the shark tank that is the Cape Ann League, Hood held her own day in and day out playing against the opponents top player.
