Crunch Time

Player of the Week

Gloucester’s Gilbert Brown had a big weekend for the Bates College football team, so good he earned New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Defensive Player of the Week.

In Bates’ 47-33 win over Hamilton this Saturday, the Sophomore linebacker picked up a career high 12 tackles to go along with a 101 yard interception return for a touchdown, Brown’s third pick of the season.

Brown is joined by Gloucester natives Pat George and Mike Tomaino on the Bates football team, which sports a 5-3 record.

Spikes called out

Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was not pleased with the play of Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes in both meetings between the teams this season. On Sunday Fitzpatrick had a few choice words for the linebacker.

“I think the biggest thing is we’re not going to back down from anybody,” Fitzpatrick said after Sunday’s Bills loss. “I think that Spikes is an emotional player. I think that he’s a punk, at times. (He) took a cheap shot at Scott (Chandler) in the first game. He was doing a lot of jabbering and talking and hitting out there. (He’s) not one of my favorite players, not high on my list.”

Spikes was fined for his hit on Chandler in the first meeting between the Patriots and Bills. He was also flagged for roughing the passer for a helmet to helmet hit on Fitzpatrick. A Spikes tackle also forced Bills running back Fred Jackson out of the game with an injury on the Bills final drive.

Sure Spikes walks the line, but in the NFL every defense needs a player with an attitude. Most defenses in the league have a guy like that and Spikes is that guy for the Patriots.

Sox sign Ross

The Red Sox have reached a deal with Ross. Not outfielder Cody Ross like most Sox fans were hoping, but catcher David Ross.

Ross is a solid backup catcher but not an upgrade at the position. Boston now has three catchers on the roster in Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway. The moves at least makes it seem like the Sox will be looking to deal one of the other two catchers.
