Area Roundup: Gloucester boys soccer off to 2-0 start

Gloucester 5 Winthrop 1

The Fishermen are off to a strong start to the season moving to 2-0 with a dominant win on the road at Winthrop.

Calvin Kipruto got things started with a penalty kick goal early in the first half and the rout was on. Dan Carpenter, Alex Dahlmer and Kevin Rogers also found the back of the net for the Fishermen.

The Gloucester defense, led by Anthony Taormina, Cody Eaton and Steve Gross, also played a strong game.

Field Hockey

Marblehead 3 Gloucester 1

Gloucester falls to 1-2 with the loss. Kayla Nasser scored for the Fishermen off of a corner with an assist from Chloe Flavin and Haley Davis. Gloucester also got solid defense from Julia Lamoureaux, Charlie Gillon and Kate Morrissey.

Lynnfield 2 Rockport 0

The Vikings fall to 1-2 on the year with the loss to one of the Cape Ann League Small frontrunners, but head coach Mary Ryan was very pleased with the two-way effort from her team calling it their best performance of the young season.

Shelby Battistelli, Heather MacAthur and Eliza Ottenheimer had strong games for Rockport as did Jess Collins and Olivia Turner on defense.


Masconomet 165 Manchester Essex 159

The Hornets (3-1) turned in a great round with their highest score of the year so far, but the Chieftains were just a little stronger Thursday afternoon.

Ben Bichet led the way for Manchester Essex with 30 points, Petey Morton scored a career high 30 while Michael Fuca and Will Burgess each chipped in 26 points.

Gloucester Falls

The Fishermen fall to 2-2 on the year with a tough loss at home to Winchester Thursday. Senior captains Curtis Quinn and Matt Lane were victorious for Gloucester with Quinn shooting an even par 35 powered by a pair of birdies and Lane sinking a par putt on the 9th to win his match.
