Area Roundup: Gloucester baseball slugs its way past Beverly

The Fishermen (7-3) were powered by a six-run fifth inning and Lenny Taormina held a strong Beverly offense in check for his third win of the season. The Panthers brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh inning but a line drive double play started by second baseman Devon Murray ended the contest.

“It’s nice to be at 7-3 in the first half of the season,” Gloucester head coach Joe Orlando said. “I was very happy with what we did all around tonight, hitting, pitching and defense.”

The Fishermen continue to to hit the ball all over the park. Alex Webb had three hits, including a solo home run in the first inning. Mark Horgan had three hits, Santo Parisi had two hits and Peter Clark had two hits.

Orlando also praised the defense of Murray, who had five put-outs at second base.

Gloucester broke things wide open in a six-run fifth thanks to big hits from Horgan, Parisi and Mike Muniz.

Manchester Essex 5 Lynnfield 0

The Hornets move to 5-0 on the year with a shutout win over a tough Lynnfield squad.

“It was a nice result today,” Hornets head coach Rob Bilsbury said. “Lynnfield is a very solid team and we played some nice tennis. We got off to quick starts in all of our matches and kept things rolling.”

Picking up wins for the Hornets were Mike Fuca at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-2), Calvin Lamothe at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-3), Sam Girian at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0), the No. 1 doubles tandem of Jeff Durkin and Seth Cohen (7-5, 6-1) and Colin Babikian and Josh Christopher at No. 2 doubles (7-5, 6-1).


North Reading 11 Manchester Essex 0

The Hornets ran into perennial state powerhouse North Reading on Thursday. Nicole Bradley led the way for the Hornets with a double.

Manchester Essex 9 Beverly 7

The Hornets led from start to finish and held off a late Panthers push to improve to 8-2 on the season. More importantly Manchester Essex clinched a berth in the state tournament with the win.

Olivia Mastendino led the way for the Hornets with two goals and two assists, Brittany Smith had two goals and an assist while Carolyn Heslop had a goal, an assist and six draw controls.

Peabody 4 Gloucester 1

The Tanners snapped Gloucester’s (4-3) four game winning streak on Wednesday.

Corinne DeLouise picked up Gloucester’s win at No. 1 singles in three sets, winning the final two sets to secure the win 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Jill MacDonald and Qiana Curcuru played well at the two and three singles spots falling in a second set tie-breaker.
