The Gloucester High School co-ed varsity cheerleading squad made the trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina last weekend for the Beach Back Nationals as sort of a last hurrah for an already great season.
Heading into last weekends competition Gloucester had already built quite the resume boasting a Northeastern Conference title, the Grand Championship at the Mass. Regional Championships and a second place finish at the MSSAA Winter Cheerleading Championships in March.
When all was said and done at the Beach Bash Nationals, Gloucester earned more hardware to add to it’s already lengthy resume finishing first in the co-ed division.
“It was an amazing experience for the team and they did really really well,” head coach Beth Costanzo said.
The first place finish in Myrtle Beach earns Gloucester a trip to the United States Cheerleading Finals this weekend in Rhode Island. With the majority of the team taking SAT’s this weekend, however, Gloucester will not be attending the competition.
Gloucester had two chances to nail its routine at the Beach Bash Nationals. The highest score of the two performances was the one that counted towards the team’s finishing position.
Gloucester worked out the kinks in its first performance. The performing surface was larger and the mats had more spring than Gloucester was used to. But by the time the second performance came around, Gloucester was on its game nailing all facets of its routine en route to a first place finish.
“It was really good that we got to go twice,” Costanzo said. “The first time we were flying through the air because we weren’t used to the mats. But the second time we nailed it.”
