---- — First teamAll Stars

Salem State University’s Brett Cahill and Endicott College’s Conor Ressel, both former Gloucester High School standouts, were named first team All Stars in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference and the Commonwealth Coast Conference respectively.

Cahill, a junior, was named first team designated hitter in the MASCAC. He leads the MASCAC champion Vikings with 24 RBI while hitting .313 with one home run, 40 hits and 20 runs scored.

Ressel, also a junior, was named first team CCC outfielder thanks to a .354 batting average to go along with 20 RBI, 26 runs scored and 16 stolen bases for the CCC champion Gulls.

Salem State (25-13) and Endicott (32-12) are both heading to the NCAA Division 3 Tournament.

Inconsistent NHL

Bruins defenseman Andrew Ferrence was suspended, rightfully, for Saturday’s game two of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals for an elbow to the head of Maple Leafs winger Mikhail Grabovski. We thought the league set a precedent that head shots would not be tolerated this postseason and suspensions would be handed out of one occurred.

That is until game two on Saturday. Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf stuck Bruins winger Daniel Paille with a shot to the head late in Toronto’s 4-2 win in Boston very similar to the hit Ferrence was suspended for. Should be a suspension right? Well this is the NHL and nothing is consistent and logical when it comes to discipline handed out by the league.

Not only was Phaneuf not suspended, the league would not even review his hit on Paille. The league made also made the decision not to suspend Montreal forward Rene Borque after a really bad elbow to the head of an Ottawa Senators player Sunday night. Borque’s elbow was worse than both Ferrence and Phaneuf’s but no discipline was handed down.

Fans want consistency, that’s it, and unfortunately the league office has been anything but consistent when reviewing plays that could possibly lead to player discipline.
