Area Roundup: Vizena pitches Gloucester baseball into tournament

Senior captain Jason Vizena pitched a complete game shutout moving the Fishermen to 10-5 on the season clinching a berth in the postseason for the tenth straight season.

“It’s good to get in the tournament and get that monkey off our back,” head coach Joe Orlando said. “I’m pleased with the way we’re playing. We are going for seeding now and hopefully we can keep it going to get a home game in the tournament.”

Gloucester broke open a 1-0 game with four runs in the sixth inning. Jordan Pallazola plated two with a double to deep left field. Senior captain Mike Muniz followed with a two RBI double of his own that would have been out of any field with a fence. Curtis Quinn had a RBI single to plate Gloucester’s first run while Devon Murray reached base three times.

The Hornets fall to 1-9 with the loss. Alex Stasiak and Nicole Bradley were the players of the game for Manchester Essex as each threw out a runner at the plate from the outfield.

Girls Tennis

Swampscott 5 Gloucester 0

Gloucester falls to 6-5 with the loss to the NEC South power Big Blue. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Rose Margetson and Kelsi Salah played well in the loss falling 3-6, 2-6.
