Cusick continues to shine at UMass

Former Gloucester High School baseball standout Ryan Cusick has made the transition to Division 1 college baseball look simple this spring.

Cusick, a freshman at UMass, was honored on Monday as the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. It was the second time this season that he has earned that award. Cusick hit .476 last week (10 for 21) with eight runs scored. He boasted a .607 on-base percentage and was a perfect 4 for 4 in stolen base attempts. UMass' leadoff hitter, Cusick posted a career-best 4-for-5 performance at the plate against Dayton in the series-clinching game three win. He hit safely in all five games on the week and drew five walks in three games against the Flyers.

Cusick has started 28 games for the Minutemen (17-23) and is hitting .301. The 5-foot-8, 160-pound second baseman also has scored 29 runs, driven in 10 and stolen eight bases. Last year, Cusick led the Fishermen to a Division 1 North title, as he hit .536 with six home runs and 33 RBIs.

Cusick's former teammate at GHS, Dylan Maki, is also pitching for Northeastern University.

Maki, who was a workhorse for the Gloucester pitching staff last year, has appeared in 10 games as a freshman for the Huskies. The righty is 1-1 with a 9.69 ERA in his relief duties. He has struck out seven in 13 innings. Northeastern is 11-26 on the season.

Ryan Marques, also a former Gloucester High pitcher, is now throwing for Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

The 6-foot-1 senior right-hander is 5-3 with a 4.96 ERA in nine starts for the Engineers. He has struck out 26 in 49 innings for 23-11 WPI.

Rockport native Eric Juncker has seen limited time this season for the Salem State College baseball team (18-18).

The sophomore catcher has appeared in five games and has just six at-bats. However, he does have a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs to his credit.
