The Cape Ann Pee Wee Football C-Team championship, played between the Riverdale Rockets and the East Gloucester Vikings at New Balance Track and Field at Newell Stadium Sunday, was a close battle throughout the game.
The Rockets (10-1) would ride their dynamic backfield duo of Jack Costanzo and Jared Lucido, which combined to run for 170 with Costanzo chipping in a pair of touchdowns, to a 22-6 championship victory.
The Rockets scored right away with a 27 yard touchdown run by Costanzo on the opening drive of the game. It would be a defensive battle the rest of the half as both teams forced punts and turnovers-on-downs the rest of the way to keep it 8-0 at halftime
The Rockets started the second half much like they started the first with a big dose of Costanzo and Lucido.
The duo led the Rockets on a fifty yard drive that was capped off with a 11 yard touchdown run by Jacob Rowe, Tristen Mitchell’s one-point conversion (teams are awarded one point for a successful rush and two for a successful pass) to make it a 15-0 Rockets lead.
The Vikings came out swinging on their very next possession when a 35 yard run by Nate Montagnino set-up a one yard Robbie Schuster for touchdown run to cut the Rockets’ lead to 15-6. But the Rockets showed why they only had a single loss during the regular season and marched down field on the next possession.
A Costanzo 22 yard touchdown run, his second of the afternoon, capped the scoring and gave the Rockets a 22-6 win and the 2013 C-Team championship.
